The last time I visited a doctor to have a physical check up was in 1995 after I had my youngest child Sammy. Now, after the unexpected death of my husband caused by ventricular arrhythmia, my children urged me to see a doctor and get a check up.I agreed to do it.The results of my full check up, including blood, work was excellent. The doctor told me that my organs are in very good condition and the tests for my liver, kidneys, heart, thyroid, sugar-, cholesterol- and iron levels are great. He said that my condition is that of a thirty-year-old. I am not a perfect eater, I am not a vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, sugar free, low fat or any other special diet person. I pretty much eat what I like, in moderation. I like sweet things with my afternoon coffee, real butter and all-around creamy and fatty things, because they taste good.
In Germany I eat more meat than at home, a lot of delicious breads, rolls and pastry.
Even though I eat moderately, in my eyes my eating habits can't be the main reason for my balanced health condition.
But what I do almost daily for nine years now is yoga. I believe this is the biggest reason for my good health.Movement, breathing and calming the mind. The energy is always flowing, never stagnant and the oxygen supply into the blood stream is tremendous. That makes all the difference.
In the yoga philosophy, air (meaning oxygen or life force) is looked at as the most important food. It builds red blood cells and this strengthens the immune system. A strong immune system equals good health. Oxygen filled blood also means detoxed blood. With every breath an exchange of oxygen and toxins happens in the lungs. More breathing, more exchange, more energy flow, more flexibility, more range of motion, more joy - and a better quality of life. The breath also calms the mind which balances the blood pressure which protects the heart and other organs. It's a circle of benefits that exhilarates itself like a self-sufficient organism.
I told the doctor about my yoga practice and teaching. He congratulated me to my good health and told me to keep on living like this. I shook his hand and thanked him for the good news and the compliments.
I know nothing is a guarantee or insurance for life. But it felt very good to hear this from a doctor.Everyday I thank God that I woke up and ask to grant me life for many more years, because I love it and I want to be around my children as long as I can, discover the world and myself, share my practice with people to help them to be healthy too and most of all enjoy this precious gift bestowed upon me.
